Vintage Bertoia Diamond Chair

Vintage Bertoia Diamond Chair – In 1950, Harry Bertoia’s bending metal rods and experimenting with practical works of art led to a revered collection of seats, including this side chair. The innovative, comfortable and strikingly beautiful chair’s delicate filigree shape makes it incredible for strength and durability. In Bertoia’s own words, “When you look at these chairs, they are mostly made of air, like sculptures. Space goes through them.”

Characteristics of Knoll, Hans, and Florence’s early environment did not require Bertoia to design furniture, but encouraged him to explore everything he liked. They simply asked to show him something interesting when he arrived. Bertoia later described the process as follows:

“I looked around and quickly discovered that I was not the type of person to do research. My feeling was that it had to come from within. I began to trust my body again. I began to think about what to do with the chair wanted to do. It started very slowly. I came with a stick or wire, whether straight or bent. It was like being at home. Trying to use the wire was logical.

“I went through the positioning procedure again, taking into account the possibilities of the shape, and I explained, of course, what the wire itself is, what shape it can be and whether there are tools to do the job. went up, but the first thing that came to mind was if a shape would come to mind that would start to act as a chair, sit on it, etc. change when it grabs something physical in front of it.”

Harry Bertoia Furniture

The company that many of the most famous and iconic furniture designers of the 20th led by Florence Knoll, the company attracted such brilliant talents as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen to the compass. Their work will help change the look of American homes and offices.

The company was founded in 1938 by the German immigrant Hans Knoll. He first worked with the Danish designer Jens Risom, who created furniture with flowing lines from wood. Risom met his future wife, Florence Schust, in 1943 while serving in World War II. She studied and worked with prominent immigrant leaders at the Bauhaus, including Mies, Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer. She inspired Knoll with Bauhaus industrial art concepts and aesthetics with flat, tubular metal frames and angular shapes. When Hans died in a car accident in 1955, Florence Knoll was appointed head of the company. As much as Knoll furniture itself, it has seamlessly and efficiently transformed the American workplace with a holistic approach to design, where core departments of the company are dedicated to the planning of office systems.

Today, classic Knoll furniture remains a staple in contemporary design collections and decor. The history of modern design is written in pieces like Mies’s elegant Barcelona chair, Saarinen’s Sockel tulip chair, Breuer’s tubular steel Wassily chair, and Harry Bertoia’s plaid diamond chair. As you can see from the entries on the next page, these and other motifs have become timeless symbols of the progressive spirit and sleek sophistication of the highest modernism.

Zoe was very helpful throughout this transaction from start to finish. While I was abroad, she explored different shipping options. The booths are really nice, but I noticed that there is some confusion about the condition of the items (which could happen with this item). Zoe was very nice and understood the whole process and we made it easy for us to understand each other. I can really recommend this seller. Not only because they keep you safe, but because they also value your business. I also got some recommendations to ‘repair’ the chair to my liking.

Description : Florence Knoll (1917–2019) was a leading force of modern design. She worked from 1945 to 1965 at Knoll Associates, first as business partner with her husband Hans Knoll, later as president after his death, and, finally, as design director. Her commissions became hallmarks of the modern era, including the Barcelona Chair by Mies van der Rohe, the Diamond Chair by Harry Bertoia, and the Platner Collection by Warren Platner. She created classics like the Parallel Bar Collection, still in production today. Knoll invented the visual language of the modern office through her groundbreaking interiors and the creation of the acclaimed "Knoll look," which remains a standard for interior design today. She reinvigorated the International Style through humanizing textiles, lighting, and accessories. Although Knoll's motto was "no compromise, ever," as a woman in a white, upper-middle-class, male-dominated environment, she often had to make accommodations to gain respect from her colleagues, clients, and collaborators. No Compromise looks at Knoll's extraordinary career in close-up, from her student days to her professional accomplishments....
