Stenciled Burlap Table Runner

Stenciled Burlap Table Runner – Our dining room table has been bare since we got it. I didn’t want to cover it with a tablecloth because I like the look of the wood, but I wanted to at least find a runner; This will decorate the table a bit and protect the centerpiece from the food. The problem is that our table is about 7 feet long. Most runners I’ve found are either too small or too expensive. So I decided to create my own.

As usual, I turned to Pinterest for some inspiration. I found this blog post from Gloriously Made featuring burlap and ribbon. I really like the burlap idea, but I couldn’t find a ribbon that I liked, so I decided to stencil a border instead.

I already had two paint colors; I only had to buy the brush, runner and stencil pack as the lake mist and pond and paper palette. Well, this was my first stencil project with fabric, so there was a bit of a learning curve, but in the end, this technique worked great.

I started by placing a barrier between the burlap and the table (I used a brown paper bag). Then I pasted the template.

I added the desired color to the palette and swirled my brush until it was evenly covered.

Although the process was simple, it was time consuming. I split the work over two nights and it took a total of 3-4 hours. But it was worth it. I love how this runner turned out.

The main reason I started this project was because we were having a raclette party to celebrate my dad’s (late) 60th birthday. So I played around with the table setting.

That could be trouble! So get ready to scratch, sneeze and sweep!! Hey, it’s all worth it for the love of crafting! Is that right?

How To Make A Hand Painted Burlap Table Runner

I’m particular about straight lines and that burlap can be a little awkward, so a few years ago I found an incredible tutorial by Craftaholics Anonymous for cutting and using burlap straight through whenever I worked with burlap! This is a significant time saver!

Decide whether to sew the edges or use the no-sew method! Unfortunately, I was such a bad blogger and didn’t photograph this part! To sew, press the seam allowance, then fold under and press again. Then sew with a sewing machine. Thrifty Abode offers a very similar method. If you prefer the no-sew method, press the seam allowance and then apply Therma-Bond, Steam-A-Seam, Seam-Sew or other products according to the manufacturer’s instructions! There is a great tutorial on this method using a different material under Table and Dreaming.

Finally, you will paint the design. Seriously, let your imagination run wild! You can certainly buy a pre-made template, there are many beautiful ones! Or you can even create your own for nothing…that’s what I did!

Draw the plate, then use the ruler to divide the circle like a pie! I measured 1/2 inch on each row and hole.

Attach the template to the burlap with some masking tape and paint the dots. Once you have completed all the stitches, remove the template. Now decide which picture you want to focus on. I used this cute bunny silhouette. I found an image I liked and printed it out, then enlarged it to fit my nail. I cut out the image, leaving a simple template for painting. You can use your silhouette or crit to cut out an image or letter!

Table runners are so versatile and can really personalize your decor! So let your imagination guide you to something special in your home!

I’ve seriously crushed on the many stenciled burlap table runners I’ve seen on other blogs, Pinterest, etc. Saw it, so I bit the bullet and made one of my own.

I started with this. No, I’m not going to buy a burlap by the yard. I got this roll burlap table runner at Michael’s for 40% off, so I think it was $7.00 for a 15 foot table runner. 15 feet, people. It worked well with a large farmhouse kitchen table that was about 9 meters long and could comfortably seat 8 people. I love the table, we made it out of a reclaimed red barn. But this is an addition to another story entirely.

Vignette Design: Following My Own Advise!

I measured 6 feet of burlap and cut it to size. Then started making templates. I know you can buy a lot of French stencils these days, but I didn’t want to pay the shipping cost, so I improvised. Creating templates was easy. Deciding what to wear was so damn hard. I plan to post all about how to make your own templates in a future post.

Since rustic chic is all the rage these days, I went with it. You know, it’s all numbers, numbers, numbers. They can be found in everything from galvanized tin buckets to glass containers. It’s very easy. Then I threw in “Paris” and a fleur-de-lis and it was done. If only I had the right lens (wide angle?) to capture this properly without standing too high on the chair.

It later became 59. Don’t ask me why I picked the numbers I did. That’s all I did. I used basic black acrylic craft paint, which you can get for cheap at Michaels or Jo-Ann’s. I used one of my kid’s watercolor set brushes (very thin) and after gluing the stencils to the burlap I went to town. A word to the wise: be sure to put wax paper under the painted area so you don’t actually paint the table. Not that I did that or anything. Just saying’.

What could be more French than a fleur-de-lis? I’ve never done this before so I want simple pictures and I don’t want to over complicate the project.

So there it is. I hope you enjoy the fall decorations as much as I do. I love how it turned out. This is a good thing because it was a practice/dry run for a very involved project involving burlap and French stenciling. I can’t wait to reveal it, hopefully soon.

Decided to put our seasonal decorations in storage. I spent all of June blissfully unaware of its problems… until a week ago. In case you weren’t here last year, here’s the problem: I decorate for everything…and I decorate a lot! If you don’t believe me, check this out:

Good thing there was still burlap
