Interconnections Seam Study
Federal officials have moved forward with a transmission project that could bring new electricity from rural New Mexico to markets in Arizona.
The SunZia Southwest Transmission Project will begin in Torrance County south of Albuquerque and carry up to 4,500 megawatts (MW) of solar power into Arizona, ending in Pinal County, Arizona south of Phoenix.
The line is intended to increase renewable energy sources, allowing power to be sold in New Mexico and Arizona.
The Federal Bureau of Land Management published a notice of intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) before issuing a permit for the project on June 4, in which the agency will receive three formal approvals to request comments from ‘the limited hands.

“We are excited to give the public an opportunity to provide their input on this project,” said BLM New Mexico Associate State Director Melanie Barnes. “We invite all interested parties to a public review meeting to learn about this project and provide feedback.”
