Michigan Renewable Energy Companies

Michigan Renewable Energy Companies – A state report released Wednesday said all Michigan energy providers met or exceeded the requirement to source 10% of their energy from renewable sources in 2015.

The Michigan Civil Service Commission wrote the report based on a law dating back to 2008, which also calls for a 12.5% standard by 2019 and a 15% standard by 2021.

Most of the energy came from supplier investments, and a small part from bank-sourced energy loans purchased from consumers with energy surpluses.

Corporate Demand For Renewable Energy To Drive New Projects In Michigan

Judy Palnau is the commission’s media director. He says that while many people understand the environmental benefits of cleaner energy, many are unaware of the low costs.

“The costs have surprised even the most ardent supporters of renewable energy. Even they were shocked by how much costs have dropped since 2009,” he said, “cheaper than the cost of producing enough new fossil fuels.”

He says the low costs enable most energy companies to reach the standard step-by-step, and he fully expects the next targets to be met.

Other supporters of the report highlight how more renewable energy will benefit the consumer. John Freeman is the executive director of the Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association (GLREA), a large nonprofit dedicated to clean energy advocacy in the state. He says more renewable energy will bring competition to the market and put more control in the hands of consumers.

“We need more competition in the market. Public services should not make all decisions about energy production,” he said. “People now have the capacity to generate their own energy. A farmer can invest in a solar power system, save money in the long run, and is now responsible for one of the most costly aspects of a farm business or business.

Nearly $3.3 billion has been invested in renewable energy by 2016, which Freeman says will stay in the state if it continues to work for better energy practices.

“This is a great trend because we create jobs, stimulate the economy and help clean the air.”

Michigan Energy Innovation Business Council

I would like to congratulate DTE Energy and Ford Motor Company for taking this important step to increase the state’s solar production and put Michigan at the forefront of climate action.

Efforts like these are why Michigan had the best job growth for energy sector jobs in the nation last year; this will help advance government decarbonisation goals, create well-paid jobs and strengthen our economy.

Ford has so far been successful in transitioning to electric vehicles. The Ford F-150 Lightning had its best month since its July launch, selling 2,173 units, and the company has reopened orders for the EV truck on demand. Ford’s Mustang Mach-e sales are up 74.1%, with E-transit holding 95% market share.

What’s Next For Renewable Energy In Michigan?

But unlike most companies, Ford does exactly what it says. Electric car sales are increasing and the company is adding significant renewable energy capacity.

Overall, I appreciate Ford’s efforts here and look forward to what the company can achieve in the future. I suspect the deal with DTE Energy is the first of a far-reaching change at Ford.

Ford has made the nation’s largest purchase of renewable energy from a company, putting it 10 years ahead of schedule in its carbon neutral target.

In partnership with automaker Detroit, DTE will add 650 megawatts of new solar capacity to the state by 2025.

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, once installed, the acquisition will increase the total amount of solar installed in Michigan by approximately 70%. Based on the Bloomberg NEF New Energy Outlook, this marks the largest purchase of renewable energy by a utility in US history.

Efforts Would Drastically Overhaul State Energy Policy

“Just because I’ve heard that nothing has been done in the history of the country means it hasn’t been done in Michigan yet,” said Lt. government Garlin Gilchrist II.

Ford has set a global carbon neutrality target for 2050. One of the sub-goals in this plan was to have all Ford manufacturing facilities run on 100% locally sourced renewable energy by 2035.

The DTE partnership gives the automaker a 10-year advantage over the target. By 2025, every Ford vehicle manufactured in Michigan will be installed with 100% carbon-free electric equivalent.

“A goal really isn’t anything if it’s not a plan. It’s just a desire. It’s an example of what it looks like to really step up and do something about it today and take action,” said Jim Farley, president and CEO of the company. ford

Ford To Use Renewable Energy Sources To Manufacture Vehicles

Ford purchases carbon-free electricity through DTE’s MIGreenPower program, which is among the largest voluntary renewable energy programs in the country. DTE electricity customers receive a daily fuel mix for power generation with 15% renewable energy.

To date, more than 600 companies are enrolled in the program, along with more than 62,000 private customers. According to DTE, MIGreenPower customers have registered 2.8 million megawatt-hours of clean energy annually into the program.

The MIGreenPower program has an environmental benefit equivalent to preventing 2.2 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, according to Environmental Protection Agency calculations.

Dan Scripps, chairman of the Michigan Public Service Commission, said Michigan will “be a leader in the clean energy economy and show the world how it’s done.” Scripps sees this as a precedent for partnerships between utilities, corporations and government.

Description : When Consumers Power’s plan to build a nuclear power plant in Midland, Michigan, was announced in 1967, it promised to free Michigan residents from expensive, dirty, coal-fired electricity and to keep Dow Chemical operating in the state. But before the plan could be completed, the facility was called an engineering nightmare, a financial disaster, a construction boondoggle, a political headache, and a regulatory muddle. Most locals had welcomed nuclear power eagerly. Why, after almost twenty years and billions of dollars, did this promise of a high-tech, coal-free, prosperous future fail? And what lessons does its failure offer today as Americans try to develop a clean energy economy based on renewable power? To answer these questions, energy consultant and author LeRoy Smith carefully traces the design and construction decisions made by Consumers Power, including its choice of reactor and its hiring of the Bechtel Corporation to manage the project. He also details the rapidly changing regulatory requirements and growing public concern about the environmental risks of nuclear power generation. An examination of both the challenges and importance of renewable energy, this book will be of value to anyone interested in grappling with the complexities of our ongoing efforts to eliminate fossil fuels in favor of clean renewable energy....

Description : The solar industry in the United States is at a turning point; the cost of PV hardware has declined substantially in recent years, placing new attention on reducing the balance of system (BOS) costs of solar that now contribute to a growing percentage of installation expenses. How states address these costs through the creation of a favorable policy and regulatory environment is proving to be a critical determinant of a thriving statewide solar market. This report addresses the permitting and tax issues that may stimulate the solar market growth in Michigan. By making PV installations easier to complete through reduced BOS costs, Michigan would become a more attractive location for manufacturers and installers. As PV module costs decline and BOS costs make up a greater share of the cost of solar, action taken today on these issues will prove beneficial in the long term, providing Michigan an opportunity to establish a leadership position in the solar industry....
