After a long day of travel, you’ll appreciate having a healthy snack on hand.

One of the most common tips you hear from time to time is to create a meal plan and that includes snacks! There is nothing worse than struggling on an empty stomach after hours of traffic jams and delays. On days when the trip doesn’t go as planned – and let’s be honest – pre-planned snacks can easily make all the difference.

This tip will be especially useful for those on the Ketogenic diet. We recommend getting keto-friendly snacks ahead of time by ordering keto foods from your local grocery store (you can find a good selection at Target or Walmart) or Whole Foods on Amazon. The ketogenic diet (keto for short) is a low-carb, low-fat diet, similar to Atkins. The main focus is to reduce the amount of carbohydrates (including all added sugar) and replace them with fat. Cutting back on carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. It lowers blood sugar and insulin levels, and shifts the body’s metabolism from carbohydrates to fats and ketones. The ketogenic diet is said to be beneficial for diabetes, cancer, epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease.

Sticking to food while traveling doesn’t have to be difficult. With a little advanced planning, finding high-fat, low-carb foods is a breeze to navigate. Here are 7 of my favorite travel-friendly keto snacks.

Before keto, my typical travel snacks were potato chips, candy bars, combos, and other salty goodness. Once I committed to the keto low carb lifestyle, I had to find better options. If you love a good salty snack, here are several of my favorites.

1. Parm Crisps or Wisps One of the hardest things to go for is parm crisps. I find that parmesan cheese fries satisfy salty and crunchy cravings. My two favorite products are Parm Crisps and Wisps. These cheese slices are the perfect keto snack.

2. Oh Snap! Pickles This is another product I found when planning a road trip last summer. Individual packets of salt, vinegar – yes, please! Oh emotion! Picklescan is available at Target and many gas stations. Throw several packets in your freezer and you’re good to go.

3. Chicharrones a/k/a pork. Another salty substitute for potato chips is chicharrons, also known as pork or pork. Since your keto diet requires high fat, pork skins are a great snack option. At first I was against eating these things, but they grew on me. We can find pork skins at Target, almost any gas station or convenience store, making them a great keto snack.

4. Pepperoni & Cream Cheese Snacking on pepperoni and cream cheese tastes like a special treat. If you pack a small cooler, you can easily carry these two items on any road trip.

5. Baby cheese I can snack on cheese all day. Another high-fat, keto-approved snack that I love is individual baby cheese wraps. Their small size can easily fit in the fridge for road trips. They also come in many delicious flavors like mozzarella and cheddar cheese.

In fact, there aren’t many people who say they don’t have a sweet tooth. Because the keto diet limits sugar intake, it is very limited in sweets. You can always bake it yourself; However, ingredients for choosing keto-approved foods can be expensive. Luckily, I found a bakery that makes low-carb cookies and delivers them right to your door. Point!

6. Fat Snax Cookies. These absolutely amazing chocolate chip cookies are the best keto approved treats I’ve ever had.
