Industrial Style Curtain Rods – When we bought the house, the downstairs room was actually an office with an open entrance. And while the window looked unusual for an office, it quickly became clear that our parents needed a guest room downstairs. We decided to use Home Depot to put some French doors on the room and turn it into a spacious guest room. It’s a win-win all around.

There are benefits to living in a home that’s been well thought out by developers like John Wieland (like a basement built for a bathroom), but there are also annoyances like not being able to fit anything. I contacted the John Wieland Company to try and get the French door details to match the pocket doors, but they had no information for me. He doesn’t mind being honest. So, I packed up my perfection (with the help of some friends) and headed to Home Depot. The customer service at our Home Depot is excellent. He handled my concerns gracefully and installed the door and transom for us without a hitch.

I’m easily drawn to making everything white and fluffy, so I like to balance it out with industrial heavy pieces. That’s where DIY Industrial Curtain Rods come in. When you get it all home, clean off the grease with green wool and plain steel. It needs white writing and grease from the pole. I wash and dry it several times (a very messy process / wearing dirty clothes), then let it dry, rinse with water, wipe and dry again.

Now for the fun! Install the rod completely without the screen on it. Hold it to measure it and then mark the drill holes. This is why magnetic levels help! You want to make sure your elbows are at the right angle.

Check for studs! If you have studs there, you can use construction screws, if not, you’ll definitely need those drywall anchors. Start by drilling only one side! There’s no wiggle room with metal pipes so it’s worth going slow!

If you are dealing with drywall anchors on each side, once one side has an anchor in the wall, take the rod again (completely installed without the screen), slightly insert two drywall screws, and recheck the mark on the other side. Take it down and insert drywall anchors on that side. We have drywall on one side and studs on the other.

Add the screen to the rod and reassemble the rod completely. Again check if everything is installed and finish the screws. Ta-da! Done!

Now we just need to add some wooden floating shelves and a vintage fo-mantel! My mind is always creating things that don’t exist, so I’ll fill you in on how we achieve my imaginary designs as we go.
