How To Start Dead Car Battery

How To Start Dead Car Battery – Dead batteries are one of the most common car problems. Although you learn basic car maintenance in driver ed, starting a car is not something that everyone learns how to do. Having the right emergency equipment is a good start, but you need to know how to use it. So, here’s what you need to know about how to jump a car.

Starting a dead battery is something almost every driver has to do at least once. Before you can recharge and hit the road, here’s what you need to start your car:

How To Start Dead Car Battery

Jumper cables are long, thick insulated cables with tooth clips on one or both ends. The clips are color-coded, usually red and black, to indicate positive and negative polarity. The red clip is positive. The black clip is negative.

How To Jumpstart A Car With A Jump Starter: Rescue A Dead Battery In An Easy Way

Jump boxes are portable batteries that are used to connect a vehicle with special jumper cables. These cables connect the jump battery directly to the dead car battery. Roadside assistance typically uses a jump box when helping stalled vehicles.

Most people don’t keep a charged jump box in their car (although it’s highly recommended) so getting a dead battery back often requires starting it with another donor car and a pair of jumper cables.

It is not very complicated, but you need to know the steps to take and how to connect the cables to ensure the safety of everyone and the vehicles. Here’s what to do!

Before doing anything make sure that the battery providing the jump has enough voltage and a type of system voltage that matches (12V, 6V, etc). If everything looks good, position the donor vehicle so that the vehicles are either nose to nose or side by side. The vehicles need to be close enough for the jumper cables to reach each battery.

How To Jump Start Your Car With Jumper Cables And Another Operable Vehicle

With everything in position, it’s time to install the jumper cables and get your car running again.

Now that everything is connected, it’s time to start the donor vehicle so it can provide power to the dead battery. Let the donor vehicle run for a few minutes.

After a few minutes see one of the lights inside the car jump. If this continues, electricity is being drained from the battery.

Start the car with a dead battery. Hopefully all will go as expected and the car will be up and running again.

Now that the vehicle is running, you can disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order you attached them:

It’s best to let the car run without stopping for at least 10-20 minutes to let the battery juice back up.

If the dead car does not start after a few minutes of charging, check the connections and try again. If the car does not start after several attempts, the battery may be too far gone to start.

Car batteries have two larger nubs, called terminals. There is a positive terminal and a negative terminal. Each one should be clearly marked. Connecting the cables to the correct terminals is essential to complete the circuit and provide power to the dead battery.

Is My Car Battery Dead?

Positive terminal – The positive terminal is usually the larger of the two terminals. It is marked with “POS” or “+”. This will connect to the positive clip on the jumper cable, which is usually red.

Negative Terminal – The negative terminal on the battery is usually marked “NEG” or “-“. This will attach to another clip, which is usually black.

As long as you have it down and you have a pair of jumper cables, you should be able to get your battery back up and running.

Jump-starting a car is usually done by another car, although it can be done with a jump battery. You will connect the batteries of both cars using jumper cables. Make sure the vehicles are the right distance apart for the jumper cables to reach each battery. Draw the cars so that they are either nose to nose aligned or side by side.

Jump Starting Your Car Battery

A quick test with enough voltage for the donor, make sure the car giving the jump start headlight is stable and bright when the car is on. If the headlights are dim, this may indicate that the battery is low. If you leave the car lights on all night, the battery can drain quickly. It doesn’t make much difference if it’s a halogen, LED or xenon lamp. If you leave the light on too long, the battery will drain and the car will not start.

But in most cases this does not mean that you now need to call a garage or the breakdown service. A kind neighbor or friend can usually help. In our guide, we explain what to do if your car battery is dead.

If you accidentally leave the car lights on, the car may still start the next morning. But how long can you leave the car light on before the battery dies?

Most car batteries have a capacity of 45 Ah and a vehicle electrical system voltage of 12 volts. So if you leave the lights on inside the car all night and the two small 10 watt bulbs burn continuously, the battery will only be empty after 27 hours.

How To Recondition A Car Battery

But this only applies if the battery is new and fully charged – which rarely happens. Battery life is often shorter and can also be negatively affected by external factors such as cold.

For many drivers, this is the absolute nightmare: the car lights were left on overnight, and now the battery is dead and the car won’t start. This should not always happen for the distribution service. Instead, you can simply ask a neighbor or friend to start your car for you using jumper cables.

If the car starts, turn off the engine again – because the car will not start again. To be safe, you should drive your car for between 10 and 20 minutes, preferably without running power guzzlers like seat heating. At this time the car should “recover” and you can turn off the engine without worrying that it won’t start again afterwards.

If the car does not start after the third attempt, you should not make any further attempts to connect your battery – otherwise, expensive damage may result. In this case, it is better to call the breakdown service, which in most cases will be able to start your battery with a booster. Then you should also drive the car for at least 10 minutes before turning off the engine again.

If you leave the car lights on for too long, it can also happen that the battery is completely discharged. This is very rare, but nevertheless possible. In this case, the battery needs to be recharged, and it is better to go to a car workshop for this. In no case should you charge the battery from the house mains, i.e. from the socket – this is very dangerous!
