How To Hang Wallpaper On Textured Walls

How To Hang Wallpaper On Textured Walls – Textured wallpaper is a great way to add accent dimension and style to a wall. Try wallpaper behind the bed to make the whole room pop! When we moved into our new house, I had big plans for our master bedroom. I envisioned a fabulous wallpaper accent wall, a new bed with an upholstered headboard, and a light rug to greet our feet in the morning. Two years later, the accent wall is bare, the drywall is our headboard, and the hardwood floors are bare. Time to give our master bedroom the attention it deserves! A few months ago I put together an inspiration board for a navy and gray color scheme for the master bedroom. My husband has decided that he doesn’t like cold colors, so my challenge now is to work with the red and beige that we already have. The first step in injecting new life into the space was to install a wallpapered accent wall behind the bed. I bought this amazing textured wallpaper from Graham & Brown when we first moved in. The scrolls had been sitting in the corner for almost two years before today! Choosing the perfect background is so much more fun than struggling with colors. So many patterns and textures! And if you get tired of that, there are ways to paint over the background to change it up! Do you want to try a different type of wall treatment? Contents Materials needed for wallpaper installation How to hang textured wallpaper Paint the walls with the right color Mark the vertical reference line Cut the first strip of wallpaper lengthwise Apply the paste to the wall Apply the first sheet of wallpaper painted in corners Smooth out air bubbles Cut off excess wallpaper Align next S of wallpaper Wipe off excess paste Trim wallpaper around outlets and doors Enjoy your new textured wallpaper! Materials needed to apply the wallpaper glue I used Roman Pro-880, which gives you a little more “slip” when you line up the pattern on the wall. Brush for pasting wallpaper Brush for smoothing wallpaper Sponge for wallpaper. 6″ razor blade or other straight edge tool Hanging Textured Wallpaper Painting Walls a Matching Color It may seem like a big extra step, but painting the wall behind the wallpaper a matching color will help eliminate seams or spaces. Previous owner our bathroom is wallpapered upstairs and you can see the wall color in the seams. Check out how I removed this wallpaper for future use! I brought a sample of the new wallpaper to Home Depot to match with the paint color All walls are painted the lightest color of the wallpaper pattern This helps tie the rest of the room together Mark a vertical reference line Once the paint has dried and hardened, I marked the wall for the first strip of wallpaper. This wallpaper is 20″ wide so I measured 18″ from the corner. An additional 2″ will be cut for an exact fit Use a level to draw a straight vertical line as re Reference Cut the first strip of wallpaper to size Unroll the wallpaper and take a good look at the pattern Mine has clear horizon lines from the floor, and I wanted to line one of them up with the ceiling. Cutting the pattern right in the middle can break the flow and look weird! Once I decided where to start with the pattern, I folded the paper along that line and used painter’s tape to stick the wallpaper to the ceiling. Just let the roll fall to the ground, then stand back and see what it looks like. When you’re happy with the first piece, cut it off with a few more inches at the bottom. Set it aside while keeping it flat to remove some of the curl. Applying the paste to the wall This type of wallpaper requires sticking to the wall, which makes installation extremely easy! Using a wallpaper brush, cover the section of wall from your mark to the corner. Glue a little away from the mark so there is enough glue in the seams. This will prevent the edges from curling. Apply the first sheet of wallpaper to align the corner to the edge of the wallpaper with your vertical line on the wall, making sure to leave a few extra inches at the top and bottom. This first piece will wrap around the corner, and that’s fine. Walls are never perfectly straight, so trimming to fit is easier than trying to line up the edge of the wallpaper with a curved corner. Smooth air bubbles Be careful when smoothing textured backgrounds! I used a wallpaper smoothing brush instead of hard plastic to prevent the texture from fading. Start from the center of the bottom and brush all the air bubbles out towards the edges. Make sure you work in all directions, not just up and down. Cut the excess bottom With everything smooth and level, cut the excess. Using a straight edge, such as a wide putty knife, press firmly into the corner. Slide the razor blade along the edge, then keep the tip of the blade deep as you move the putty knife to the next section. This creates a continuous cut instead of a series of jagged stops and starts. Keep that blade sharp! I replaced the dull blades after every 2 or 3 strips of wallpaper because they would stick with the wallpaper glue. Detachable blades make this process easy! Align the next strip of wallpaper For the next strip of wallpaper, find the repeat in the pattern and match it with the strip already on the wall. I found it easiest to apply the paste first and then remove the wallpaper from the roll on the floor until I found the match. The paste dries slowly enough to allow you to slide your piece until everything lines up correctly. But a warning: try not to stretch the raised parts of this textured background when blending the pattern. I found that the long L-shaped pieces wouldn’t match their counterparts on the adjacent strip until I puffed them up a bit. Brush from different directions to prevent stretching. Wipe off excess paste Once the pattern is in place, wipe excess wallpaper paste off the seams with clean water and a wallpaper sponge. This is also your last chance to remove those air bubbles before applying the next piece! Trim wallpaper around outlets and doors Our quirky house has an electrical outlet mounted on the outside of the wall, with a pipe running between the two outlets. I appreciate having outlets on each side of the bed, but would it kill them to run them through the wall? I decided to cut the wallpaper off the pipe and leave the area underneath painted. No one was going to see it behind the bed anyway, and it was so much easier than trying to match the pattern! When I got to the other corner of the wall behind the door, I needed a two inch wide strip behind the trim to finish it off. Instead of struggling with a huge sheet, I used leftover pieces. I cut each piece 2 inches wide, found a match and glued it in place. No one will see this part of the wall behind the door, and it was easier than trying to fit an 8-foot-long sheet! Enjoy your new textured wallpaper accent wall! Man, it hurt when I finished this project! Hanging wallpaper turns out to be a good exercise for the arms! It took me about three hours to complete this wall by myself, but it was worth it. You can’t get this 3D look with paint! The shading in the pattern really makes the blocks stand out, even though it’s really only a few millimeters from the wall. The texture really stands out when viewed against a light, like this one on the nightstand. I can’t believe it took me two years to work up the courage to install this amazing textured wallpaper. The end result completely changed the feel of the room! I was so inspired by this project that I made this leather upholstered headboard with a wooden frame that mimics the wallpaper pattern.
