Washing Machine Stains: Possible Causes And Cures

WARNING: This site is for informational purposes only. It is supplied as is, without warranty. Some stains and messes just won’t come out and are permanent. Also, some cleaning methods can damage your item, so if what you are cleaning or washing is sentimental or expensive, call a professional. See disclaimer for more information. Let’s face it: Kids love to play in the dirt. Small children are fascinated by making mud puddles. Preschoolers and school age kids love to make them and then play with them. And older children of school age take this love for mud to a new level: they play football, baseball, softball or soccer. Which means that at some point in their parenting existence, most moms (and some dads too!) need to know how to get mud out of clothes.

I used to think I was a stain guru. At the seasonal consignment sales where I go out several weeks a year, all the other moms always come up to me asking how I get this or that stain out of things. I even wrote a whole post listing my favorite stains.

Luckily (?), last summer my girls found a very muddy cave to explore while attending our first family music festival. When we got home, it was time to do a thorough test, which saves mud and dirt the best.

Quick Ways To Remove Grease Stains From Clothes After Drying

When my dear husband and I enjoyed the Sunday morning “Gospel Set” at last summer’s music festival, the girls got bored. So they asked if they could explore a cave in the nearby rock formations with the other children.

My husband and I have been wondering all weekend how our girls were finally old enough to go play with other kids without us having them every second. So we said sure, go for it! – we’ll contact you when the series is over.

It had not occurred to us that the “cave” in question was covered in mud. Or that our children used to spend a lot of time on the floor of this muddy cave. Boy did he, absolutely. Laundry heaven, not so much.

Cleaning them in the shower that night was the easy part. But when we got home, I decided it was time to conquer the laundry mud challenge once and for all.

How To Get A Stain Out Of White Jeans

In the main testing, I mostly applied the stain remover according to the instructions on the package, with one notable exception. In both cases, I applied the treatment directly to the fabric on the muddiest shorts.

For the jean shorts and khaki shorts, I put Oxi paste on the back right pocket, Carbona spray on the center seam, Fels-Naptha on the top left, and Zote on the lower left.

I also tested a bunch of socks with OxiClean, Zotella, and Fels-Naptha. All the socks were muddy from the camping trip, but the soles had also accumulated dirt from previous use. After washing, I dried everything in case all the stains didn’t come out the first time because I didn’t want the heat of the dryer to “set” the remaining stains.

The first stain treatment on the shorts showed much improvement, but the mud marks were still visible. All four products produced similar results on both denim and khaki shorts.

How To Get Stains Out Of Almost Anything

That I asked Michele if she usually worked Zote into the fabric with a scrubbing brush between treatment and washing, even though the package didn’t mention this step.

Working the soap into the wet cloth with a scrubbing brush was clearly better at getting the green shorts clean on the first try.

Socks fared better than any shorts in the first round. Dirt stains and mud residue were removed from every treated sock after just one treatment, even though I didn’t use a brush when I put the soap on some socks.

Any of these products, when used as described above, will do a reasonable job of removing mud and dirt from clothing.

Common Clothing Stains And How To Remove Them

However, Zote was the overall winner because he has one decisive advantage over Fels-Naptha. See if you can figure out what it is from these pictures:

I was initially impressed with the environmentally friendly Fels-Naptha paper wrappers compared to the hard to open Zote plastic wrappers. But after using the bars (keeping them in their wrappers so they don’t get wet on my wet hands and slip out), I found that rubbing the Zote bar into the fabric is easier than the Fels-Naptha. very reason. Zote’s plastic wrap makes a stronger holder than the Fels paper wrap, which just disintegrates over time. Maybe good for the planet, but not so much for quick blemish treatments.

The most amazing results came from cleaning several dirty shoes for the fall children’s resale season:

I usually try to clean the soles of my shoes with magic earrings, which usually make them cleaner – but not always, and not always completely. (Also, scrubbing with melamine sponges on rough surfaces wears out the sponge pretty quickly.) So on a whim, wet the bottom of a white shoe, rub a Zote bar on it, scrub a little, and rinse.

As you can see, Zote’s shoe (right) looks clean as new, compared to the left shoe, AFTER I used the melamine sponge on it!
