Home Furniture Decor – Home staging experts know how to play up your home’s strengths, hide its flaws, and make it more interesting. We talked to some local influencers to get their tips on how to declutter your home without breaking the bank.

If you want your home to make a great impression, paint your front door a fun and beautiful color. “Red is a lucky color in many cultures,” says New Jersey musician Lara Allen-Brett. A red door was a sign of “welcome” to weary travelers in early America, and in churches it was a place of safety.

According to San Francisco musician Christopher Breining, two other colors are gaining popularity: orange and yellow. Both colors are associated with happiness and warmth. There is only one thing: an old screen door. Get rid of it or replace it with a full glass window that you can switch to the screen.

Stick to colors like beige or gray, especially on the first floor where flow is important. “You want to minimize awkward transitions,” Breining says. Freestanding walls give you great decorating ability, allowing you to easily change your accessories.

And if you have two small rooms next to each other, painting them in a matching color can help make them feel larger. Look at the painting and move it up and down a shade or two for easy transitions from room to room, says Allen-Brett.

Think of a fancy hotel lobby: Furniture is arranged in groups that invite conversation. Consider the same sense of balance and harmony when placing furniture in your living room.

“A U-shaped conversation area, with a sofa and two chairs facing each other at each corner of the coffee table, or an H-shape, with a sofa facing two chairs and a coffee table in between. It’s good,” said Michelle Lin, a musician from Dallas.

One common mistake to avoid is pushing all the furniture against the walls. “People do it because they think it makes the room look bigger, but the truth is that furniture that floats off the walls makes the room look bigger,” she says.

“When it comes to heavy and old screens, a window is better than bad,” says Lin. Ideally, window blinds should be functional and beautiful: think of sheer ones combined with long panels.

If your room is sunny, choose light colors that won’t fade. The best lightweight fabrics recommended for panels are cotton, linen, and silk blends because they hang well.

“Mirrors can brighten up a room because they diffuse light across the room,” Breining says. But putting it in the wrong place can be just as bad as not having it.

Design Choices That Make Your Home Easier To Clean

Place the mirrors not in front of the windows, but on the walls opposite them. Placing a mirror facing a window can direct light directly out the window.

“There are few funnier things than putting small and tall pictures on the wall,” Breining said. The center of the image should be on the surface of the face. If one person is short and the other is tall, their height is average.

Also consider weight; go big with one large piece for a large plate, or mix in small portions style-wise. Finally, don’t place images too far apart; 2-4 inches between elements is best.

Each room should have three types of lighting: ambient, which provides general lighting and often comes from the ceiling; work that is often located on the kitchen island or in the study area; and, so to speak, the voice that is the ornament of art.

A living room needs about 3 watts (42 lumens) per square meter. Breining swears by using candles. “Putting a chandelier or lamp in the corner will light up the ceiling and make the room look bigger,” she says.

Follow these general rules for a sectional bed: “In the living room, sofas and chairs should have four legs in the furniture mix; the bed should define the seating area,” Breining said. “At least the leg of the sofa and the seat should be on it.

Living rooms with less space often require an 8- to 10-foot or 9- to 12-foot rug to accommodate a chair. Go smaller with the size of the rug and everything will look neutral.

The longer you stay at home, the less likely you are to experience clutter over time. Sometimes you just need a fresh pair of eyes. You can hire an organizer for a few hours to organize bookshelves and closets (expect to pay $35 to $150 an hour depending on where you live), where the racks are often filled with twice as much material as they can hold.

Breining recommends reducing the number of items on your shelves by 50 percent. Then add groups of books between the vertical rows and add decorations like glasses or pots between them.

If your ceilings are on the low side, paint them white to make the room less claustrophobic. Hang curtains higher than the window, says Allen-Brett, to trick your eye into thinking the room is taller. Most standard curtains measure 84 or 96 inches, so you can go about 3 inches from the door frame before it’s too short.

If you want to hang them higher, you should order plain curtains. Want sample panels? Try vertical stripes; the lines extend to your walls. Leaning a large mirror against a wall can make a room appear taller.

Do you have solar panels? Recycle them with spray paint and cheap cleaners. “A bronze lamp from the 1980s can quickly breathe new life with hammered bronze or satin-nickel paint,” says Breining.

Even old kitchen cabinets can use white paint and new appliances. And if you thought there was no hope for Formica countertops, think again. Breining’s Rust-Oleum Countertop Transformations swears by a throwback to the classic 1970s game with a DIY countertop product that mimics stone.

What to do: Replace broken and improperly installed switch panels and door covers with new switches. “Nothing draws a cozy space like a dark almond changing table,” says Lynn.
