Dog Crate End Table
I’m sure you’ve heard that we have a new family member – Chief Hopper. Hopper is Morkie (Maltese + Yorkie blend) and is very fun. Girls love to play with it, I admit. While preparing for Hopper we bought all the usual stuff – bed, toys, food, bowls etc. We couldn’t find anything we really liked. Josie is a huge fan of mid-century modern and we wanted something that could also serve as an end table. You can see where this is going. In the end, I decided to build a dog cage.

For this project, I got some 1x clone and sanded plywood from my local Home Depot. One thing to remember (because I didn’t do it at first) is that maple is hardwood and absorbs stains more slowly than softwood. I am pleased with the “two-color” appearance of our dog cage. If you want something different in shape, try to buy the same types of wood.
I started by cutting the bottom and back pieces to size from a sheet of plywood. I like to use painter’s tape, especially when cutting across the grain, to better prevent tearing. If you know of any other tips, feel free to share them in the comments! I adapted this to fit a 18 ″ x 30 ″ dog bed.
The sides are made of maple and a round metal ladder. I started building the sides by cutting the rails and trees to length. This is where I really need a hacksaw and a dowel jig. Instead, I did it with a grinder and drill.
The stair balusters will be iron gratings, and I had to cut three equal lengths from each baluster. With Josie’s help and many meticulous adjustments, we cut the bars and sanded the sharp edges.

Full opening – Hopper’s head is smaller than expected and can pass through the bars. I placed the strips at 2-3 / 4 inch intervals. If you want to build this dog cage, try placing the bars a little closer together for dogs weighing under 6 pounds. Hopefully he’ll get big enough so he won’t be able to beat the dog’s cage anytime soon.
As the 1/2 ″ wall plugs fit very tightly into the 1/2 ″ holes, I rounded one end of the dowel and smeared it with a bit of paste wax.
One feature of this dog crate I wanted was a sliding pocket door. Thanks to this, we can leave the chest open for Hopper without the door leading to the room. To do this I cut scraps with holes at both ends. Then I cut the appropriate slot for two slides. The vault door floats up on the piano hinge, then rests on the side pieces and slides back into the chest.
After I was satisfied with the slides, I made a box door, similar to the sides. I used playing cards to create a small space for sliding the door.

Then I trimmed the plywood top to size. There was a little back and forth as I had to factor in the thickness of the strips around the edges on three sides and cut some clearance so the top of the door could get around. In this case, I also attach tapered legs. I just placed these in a shallow circle and glued them.
Once the top was in place and the door was able to slide as expected, I tore off a little more maple to create a fancy finish. It is glued over the entire front surface. You can see that I cut the scraps of wood to fix everything better.
After finer and finer sandpaper, the dog box was ready for stains. Josie chose Dark Walnut and we applied two coats. Finally, I covered the crate with three layers of polyurethane.
After a few days, the polyester had dried and the smell was gone. We moved the crate home and I was rewarded when Hopper quickly crawled into the crate and lay down.

The sides are at the right height so that she feels safe and can lie down and sleep. There is enough space for a little cat to curl up in a blanket and drink water and food. Personally, I thought the box looks a bit industrial for use in my home, but on the outside it was perfect. It doesn’t leak in the rain, it’s amazingly tough and tough, and we’re bringing it back for the winter so we can use it again next year! It was worth the price we paid.

The cage will accommodate a dog up to 10 pounds. On the other hand, assembly was straightforward, but as mentioned before, the actual box is not up to standard in terms of quality. It’s a chest that needs to be replaced in 5 years, and $ 170.00 plus tax is frustrating.
