You may have noticed that we haven’t closed the gate yet. It is important to help your dog love his den before closing the door. The training technique described above helps your dog associate positive events, making the crate a positive thing in its own right.
Say “come in” and praise your dog as soon as he enters and give him a treat. Immediately after that, close and open the door for 1 second and say “OUT!” say that Praise your dog for going outside (no more treats for this skill, going outside is a reward). Repeat several times until your dog is comfortable when you close the door.
Repeat step 3 but slowly increase the door closing time. The first few minutes will be the most difficult, and you must move slowly to prevent yawning. If your pet can live without you for 5 minutes, you can go to 15 minutes, then 30, then 1 hour, then 2 hours. When you start leaving your dog in the crate for 30 minutes or more, put away the plush Kong and/or chew toys so he can enjoy his time in the crate. Once you open the door ask him to come out and pick up the Kong and toys. It is very important that your dog understands that these special toys are only available when in the crate.
Made it! You now have a dog that can get in and out of the crate on command, and most importantly…loves to sit in it! If you have a small puppy, do not take this step for more than a few days. In fact, you can do it over the weekend. For older or shy dogs, this may take a little longer.
